Malaria Day 2012: An Inside Look at the World’s Most Enigmatic Disease

In honor of World Malaria Day, The InterDependent takes a look at the progress made, as well as what still needs to be done, to prevent the disease.

In the half-decade that the world has marked Malaria Day on April 25, something remarkable has been achieved: Surely everyone has heard of a mosquito-borne disease called malaria. They likely also know that, while it’s a preventable illness, it still kills as many as 1 million people every year, many of them children.

Of Budgets and Bednets: Improving Malaria Spending

Earlier this year, the global burden of malaria made the news when a study in the Lancet rolled out new malaria mortality estimates. The findings suggested that malaria may cause as many as 1.24 million deaths annually—previous estimates had concluded that malaria claimed the lives of just half this number. The higher estimates of disease burden brought renewed attention to the current resources available to combat malaria, a disease most often prevalent among the poor and vulnerable in many developing countries.
