Nothing But Nets at Model UN!

Yesterday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the UN Association of the United States kicked off the Seventh Annual Model UN Conference. Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly, where participating students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization's agenda. Students spend numerous hours preparing for Model UN- researching, drafting speeches, and preparing draft resolutions- all in the interest of resolving problems that affect countries all over the world.

Nothing But Nets and Malaria were the main topics of opening ceremonies. I had the pleasure of introducing NBA Legend and Nothing But Nets spokesperson Sam Perkins as the keynote speaker of the evening. The students were excited to watch Sam step up to the podium and hear him speak about the fight against malaria and Nothing But Nets. Sam inspired 2,200 students from 17 countries to “send a net and save a life.” He described how easy it is to get involved, by giving an example of how his own twin daughters started a fundraiser for Nothing But Nets at their school. US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad, echoed Sam’s words of the importance of youth engagement in global issues such as malaria.
