Usher’s Camp New Look kids to send 40,000 nets to Ethiopia
Submitted by Jenna Sauber on July 24, 2009
Today we’re excited to announce the engagement of even more youth in the Nothing But Nets campaign – 130 kids from musician Usher Raymond’s Camp New Look have committed to send 40,000 nets to refugees in Ethiopia this year – what a huge show of support! The youth, ages 14-18, announced their pledge at the close of Camp New Look, a summer program designed by Usher to empower youth from under-served communities by providing them with the economic and educational building blocks necessary to become corporate and community leaders. And some of the kids will even get to accompany Usher to Ethiopia to deliver the nets themselves later this year!
“We are so proud of the youth at Camp New Look who have committed to use the power of service to change their own lives and the lives of children and families in Africa,” said Shawn H. Wilson, president of Usher’s New Look.
While at camp, the youth learned about malaria and how nets are one of the most effective ways to prevent its spread in Africa. Nothing But Nets was there to talk about our campaign and motivate the campers to spread the word about how easy it is to help – and judging by the goal they set, they are definitely motivated!
Carmen Seay, a first year camper from Detroit, said “No one in my community talks about service. The opportunity to be involved in Usher’s New Look and the Nothing But Nets campaign will honestly change my life. I can’t wait to bring the power of service back to my community.”
Here at the UN Foundation and Nothing But Nets, we’re constantly amazed by the enthusiasm of youth to engage in service and global issues, and this new commitment is another great example of how easy it is for anyone, no matter who you are, where you are from, or how old you are, to make a difference in the lives of others. What’s especially cool is that these kids are following by example - people are helping them, and in return, they are giving back to their communities. How awesome is that?
Thanks to Usher’s New Look and Camp New Look for their support of Nothing But Nets!
