Bishop Huie & the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church
This week Bishop Janice Riggle Huie and 35 members of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church will be supporting the distribution of more than one million long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets to children and their families in Côte d’Ivoire. But this is much more than just a week-long effort! In fact, this week has been two years in the making.
In 2006, Bishop Huie and the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church developed an innovative partnership with Bishop Boni and the Côte d’Ivoire Conference of the United Methodist Church to connect these two ministries in deep and meaningful ways. One key area of focus for this partnership is health and, as such, the Texas Annual Conference has rallied to support the health and welfare of the people of Côte d’Ivoire, specifically with respect to malaria prevention.
Participating in the Clinton Global Initiative on behalf of the United Methodist Church in September 2007, Bishop Huie announced a commitment to raise funds through the Nothing But Nets campaign to provide a minimum of 150,000 bed nets for children and their families in Côte d’Ivoire.
Over the course of last 2 years, the people of the Texas Annual Conference have come together to raise over $1 million for bed nets through the Nothing But Nets campaign. They have taken collections during Sunday services, hosted fundraisers including a bike tour from Houston to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, and worked with local Nothing But Nets partners to get the Houston community engaged.
From November 11-15, 2008, the two years of work will be fulfilled with the distribution of over one million life-saving bed nets to children and their families during Côte d’Ivoire’s integrated measles campaign (during which measles vaccines, Vitamin A and de-worming medicine will also be delivered).
Below are a couple of excerpts from the delegation's blog on the ground:
Josh Hale, Nov. 10: We also tried out a net (again, pictures soon!) and in general learned a lot more about both this specific campaign and what it means for the future. I am particularly excited about the impact this partnership model will have for the next 50 years of health delivery!...
Eleanor Colvin, Nov. 9: ...if you haven’t been blessed with an opportunity to give, your chance is coming… Our continued commitment to covering the country of Cote d’Ivoire with long-lasting, insecticide treated nets that stop the spread of malaria will save lives — lives that are worth it!
