Together, We’ve Sent "Moore" Nets to Save More Lives in Central African Republic
In 2010, Nothing But Nets worked with singer/actress Mandy Moore, Population Services International (PSI), and our United Nations partners to fill an urgent need for bed nets in Central African Republic (C.A.R.). Thousands of supporters joined us by spreading the buzz and sending a net to every family in C.A.R. Reaching this goal was a big step toward achieving the global goal of ending malaria deaths by 2015. Thank you all for your hard work to send nets and save lives!
Last year, the UN identified an immediate need for anti-malaria nets in Central African Republic due to its location, proximity to conflict-ridden countries, and vulnerability to flooding. C.A.R. also hosts a large population of displaced persons, who are particularly susceptible to contracting malaria.
Joined by Mandy Moore, PSI, and our supporters, Nothing But Nets spread the buzz about the need for long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed nets in Central African Republic. Supporters rallied around the need for “Moore” nets to save more lives, bringing together their friends, families, teammates, co-workers, to raise awareness and nets.
In August, thousands of Facebook users joined experts from Nothing But Nets and PSI, Social Media Envoy and activist Derrick Ashong, and singer/actress Mandy Moore for a unique Facebook Town Hall. They answered questions about C.A.R., malaria, and the need for nets. It was our first-ever online “town hall!” Read more about the Malaria Town Hall -- and watch the video, if you missed it!
In September, Mandy visited C.A.R. with Nothing But Nets and PSI to kick off Phase Two (of three) of the net distribution. On the trip, Mandy and the rest of the team met with government officials, UNICEF representatives, community health workers,
and families that had been affected by malaria. One mother, Pauline, had just lost two of her ten children to malaria. The nets you’ve sent help Pauline and mothers like her keep their children safe from this deadly disease. Read more stories of the trip to C.A.R.
When she returned in October, until the end of the year, Mandy continuously reached out to her fans, her Twitter following, and of course, Nothing But Nets supporters, to ask them to join the movement to end malaria deaths by sending nets and saving lives.
Supporters around the country held fundraisers of all shapes and sizes, sent nets on behalf of loved ones for the holidays, and did their part to spread the buzz on their social networks! Read about your amazing work this year.
Starting in late December, our partners on the ground -- including PSI, WHO, UNICEF, and the Ministry of Health in C.A.R. -- kicked off the final phase of the distribution and delivered the hundreds of thousands of life-saving nets you’ve sent to families in Central African Republic. Thanks to your support, these families can protect themselves from malaria for years to come!
From everyone here at Nothing But Nets, our partners, and on behalf of the families in C.A.R. you’ve helped by sending nets, THANK YOU.
