The Nets from Centerville
My name is Timothy Katz - my friends call me “Mo,” and I am a twelve year old 7th grader at Stone Middle School in Centreville, Virginia. I read the Rick Reilly article in Sports Illustrated magazine last year about Nothing But Nets. When I was given the assignment to perform an act of charity for my Church Confirmation, I remembered the Nothing But Nets campaign and decided to create a fund-raising plan to support its efforts. I started by creating a Netraiser Team on-line and I named it Nets from Centreville (VA). I also spent a lot of time reading and learning facts about malaria and the Nothing But Nets program so I would be prepared to talk about it.
I talked with a representative from a local restaurant (Glory Days) who offered coupons for a free appetizer to anyone making a $10 donation to my team. My parents also designed and purchased Nothing But Nets pens to distribute to people making donations to help spread the word.
I planned on holding my fundraiser during a weekend when the boys high school basketball programs in the Southwestern Youth Association community recreational league were having their playoff games because I knew a lot of people would be passing through. I also sent an e-mail to the league ahead of time to give everyone a heads up about the fundraiser.
On the weekend of March 3-4, 2007, armed with my handmade posters and handouts, I set up in the lobby of Centreville High School to talk to people as they came in about the Nothing But Nets campaign and to solicit donations. I set a high goal of 300 nets, and made great progress over the weekend! When the weekend was over, checks continued to arrive in the mail and on March 15, 2007 I hit the $1,500 mark. Even though I had hoped to raise $3000, because the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches the donations dollar-for-dollar, it meant that 300 families in Africa will receive mosquito nets because of my fundraiser. And because of their match, I really HAD met my goal.
I am very appreciative to everyone who was so generous in helping out. Click here to join my team.
Thanks for being a part of this very important effort.
Mo
