Welcome

Rick ReillyThank you for joining Nothing But Nets, the global campaign to save lives by preventing malaria. When I learned that a million kids die each year of malaria, I wrote a column asking people to give $10 for malaria bed nets. I started to get letters. And checks. Already, more than 17,000 people have raised $1.2 million—enough to buy 100,000 nets.

It’s a simple, life-saving solution, and a $10 donation is all it takes to buy a bed net, distribute it to a family in Africa, and explain its use. Your donation to the Nothing But Nets campaign will help save a life.

Nothing But Nets is powered by passionate people and communities – school groups, sports teams, religious institutions, book clubs, alumni associations, and more. We are excited to have you on the Nothing But Nets team! Thank you for getting involved and for sending nets to save lives.

Good

Glad you followed up your original article

Rick, My husband and I read your amazing piece on Nothing But Nets last spring and agreed that we should make a donation. I tore out the article with all good intentions, but unfortunately it fell by the wayside. Your follow-up piece was great for so many reasons, but mainly as it served as a reminder that I had never made the intended gift. Way to go on making this a priority. This is a wonderful cause and we are happy to be a part of it.

Poker Night Donation

Dear Rick Reilly Over the recent Christmas Holiday, I joined my family in Vermont. This year’s meeting had a theme—Celebrity Casino Night. There was Roulette, Black Jack and Texas Hold ‘Em. There were nine of us total, and each started with the same amount of chips. Then, each of us had to name a charity we would be playing for and how much we would like to donate to that charity. Immediately, I knew I would be playing for the Nothing But Nets Charity (since I have donated twice before). Whoever won all the chips at the end of the night would donate the total amount from all nine of us to their charity of choice I fought hard, even when I was in last place with 11 chips. In the end, my poker skills kept me in the game and I eventually won the tournament. I was very excited that I won because I knew that money was going to an excellent cause. I explained to my family how I read your article in Sports Illustrated, then how you went to Africa to see first hand how the nets were working. On behalf of my family, I am honored to be donating $300 to your charity! I would like to thank Artie, Alice, Helaine, Neil, Peggy, Herta, Adam and Kathleen for contributing to this charity and for making a difference in the lives of the children who will be saved with this donation. Sincerely, Herschel Greenberg

My husband's gift to me...

Hi Rick, My husband is a dedicated SI subscriber and reader. He comments on your column a lot and greatly admires you as a writer. Last night he e-mailed me the link to the Nothing But Nets site suggesting it as very worthwhile charity for our consideration. I agreed, we donated $100.00. My husband has a good heart, that's the best X-mas gift for me! Thank you for your wonderful work on this project and for spreading the word about this great charity. Happy Holidays! Sincerely, Gayle F.

Group created

I have created a group.... "Nothing But Nets." Get ppl to join.

Facebook

I suggest that Nothing But Nets start a Facebook group. I am confident that many facebook users could afford at least $10 to send a net.

Christmas Donation

Folks, like many other SI readers, I read but did not act upon the first letter published by Mr. Reilly in May 2006. Since that time, a child of my own was born unto my wife and I. Every day our child brings joy to our hearts. The thought that malaria will ... today ... cause the death of a child elsewhere, with the resulting cessation of joy to that child's mother and/or father, is enough for all parents to consider this charitable cause. We recently contributed to a fine domestic charity, which proceeded to use at least 25% of our contribution to send us unwanted (and unrequested) propoganda and mailings until I called their NYC headquarters and demanded they cut it out. This charity appears as if it will take your $10 and immediately send a net without siphoning funds for propoganda. The root cause of malaria must be eliminated through insecticides or improved infrastructures such as waste water treatment, for which the communities apparently cannot afford, and for which a new child to the world is hardly accountable. If you can easily spend $500 per year on sports collectibles like I can, I encourage you to read this post and match my $500 Christmas donation today.

net campaign issue

Mr Reilly,As a Nigerian I would like to commend your great effort to combat malaria not only in Nigeria but the entire continent as a whole. However I would like to point out that as you already know nets are just a superficial solution to this problem of malaria. It is not feasible to spend an entire day indoors inside these nets I know because when I was growing up we used nets in our house. A better way to fight malaria permanently is to encourage the pharmacetical industry to actively invest more in the search for an ultimate vaccine for malaria, repeal laws against the use of DDT to spray mosquito ridden areas e.t.c.The majority of your audience, most Americans need to know that nets as a solution to malaria is like saying building a fence around your house will prevent you from being robbed

Read your columns

Sent money before. Just read your latest. Thanks for doing it and for telling us about it. Love your stuff. As a former Marine Fighter pilot, I really loved your Blue Angel story. It still makes the emnail rounds. Semper Fi, Mike

nothing but nets

Rick, I am similar to many loyal SI readers in that I always open my magazine from the back so I can read your article before anything else. I recently read your Nothing but Thanks article, and remembered how I felt when I read your first article on this topic. I meant to donate, but like many things in life, I got busy and forgot to do so. After reading this follow-up article I went straight to my computer and made a small paltry donation that will save many, many lives. We as most Americans are so fortunate for our lives that we can imagine people needing help so badly as this. Thanks for reminding us, and bringing this back to our attention. Great job Rick, please keep it up, and don't let Bonds off the hook either. Chip Thomas San Antonio, TX

Thank you for an unbelievable piece

Not knowing why I had allowed myself to be signed up for a Sports Illustrated subscription while checking out at Best Buy store, I suddenly found the reason when reading Rick's article on Nothing But Nets. I'm 32 years old and I've spent very few of my resources on charities over the years - there's just so many just causes and persuasive fund raisers that I've always wondered how to choose. "3000 kids! That's a 9/11 everyday!", grabbed me and the simplicity and purity of the solution grabbed me even more. Rick has always been one of the most entertaining writers in America and in my opinion he is now one of the most effective. Thank you for all you are doing for these children. -Devin Downey, Dallas, TX

My hat is off to you!

Rick, I am a Banker by day and a sports nut the rest of the time. My wife is a high school English teacher. Teaching writing techniques to high schoolers can sometimes be a difficult task. She regularly uses your articles to make a point to her students as to "how it should be done". Over the years you have brought tears to my eyes many times. Often I do not get my entire Sports Illustrated read, but I never fail to read your articles. I am a member of Rotary International. A few years ago we set out to eliminate polio. We have almost accomplished our goal. The net project is similar in that it is so easy for us to make a better life for those much less fortunate than us. Keep up the good work. Volunteer work in rural Uganda

Dear Rick, I am a Registered Nurse who will be travelling to Africa in February 2007 to work in a rural Health Clinic in Uganda. Natondome Village is situated in the south-east pocket of Uganda, near Mbale district, and has no running water, flush toilets and sporadic electricity. I will be working for a local Ugandan NGO for 4mths; 'Foundations for Development of Needy Communities' (FDNC). Please feel free to visit www.fdncuganda.org The Health Clinic has been previously closed for lack of a qualified nurse and is the only form of health care available to the villages. There is a high transmission rate of P. falciparum malaria in Uganda, and the Health Clinic does not currently have mosquito bednets for distribution. If malaria infection is left untreated, it has the potential to result in death due to the infected red blood cells obstructing blood vessels in vital organs; including brain, liver ans kidneys (Malaria Fact Sheet, 2005). Therefore primary protection methods should be implemented in resource-limited countries (such as Uganda), where access to preventative treatment is rarely an potion due to the high costs associated with these antimalarial medications (Schellenberg et al., 2003). In addition to the high transmission rate of malaria in Uganda, the high prevalance of HIV infection further compounds the situation. This is due to the suppression of the immune system, leaving the HIV infected individual greatly susceptible to malaria (Daniel, L., 2006). Numerous studies have shown that bednets are extremely effective in reducing the incidence of malaria in many endemic areas, including sub-Saharan Africa (Muller et al., 2006). Furthermore, there is substantial evidence that insecticide-treated bednets are more effective due to the repellant action (Muller et al., 2006). Although insecticide-treated bednets are widely promoted in Africa, access to this vital preventative measure is limited in Natondome Village. As the Health Clinic is the only health resource in Natondome Village, I am aiming to provide insecticide-treated bednets to those at greatest risk of malaria infection, as well as appropriate education to this community. This target population includes infants and children below the age of 5years, who have not yet developed any natural immunity, and pregnant women who have a reduced natural defense mechanism (Malaria Face Sheet, 2005). It has been reprted that malaria causes approximately 10,000 maternal deaths and 200,000 infant deaths per year in Africa (Daniel, L., 2006). In fact the World Health Organisation recommends the use of insecticide-treated bednets to prevent the onset of malaria (Daniel, L., 2006). I am hoping to take a large box of bednets to the village, as well as the insecticide to treat them before distribution to those identified at risk of infection. I am seeking a donation from your organisation 'Nothing But Nets' in order to fulfil my ambition and hopefully positively impact this community by decreasing the rate of malaria transmission and therefore the rate of morbidity and/or mortality also. A donation of mosquito bednets would be of great appreciation and I am willing to feed back to Nothing But Nets with news of how successful your donation was. As I will be in Natondome Village for AFRICA MALARIA DAY on 25th April 2007, I believe that the implementation of this health promotion initiative to have great significance. Just read Rick's column from S.I. Am sending $100.00 today. Merry Christmas

Christmas came early this year

I just recieved an email last night from this campaign -- my boyfriend made a donation in my name as a Christmas gift to me! I am a huge advocate of not letting the massive continent of Africa slip through the cracks. There is so much that we privileged Westerners can do for the common good over there, and it's needed. I hope people realize not only the need for aid but the reality that even small donations like $10 have a HUGE impact! I've been reading and loving your column for years and after telling my boyfriend to check it out he read your latest article on Nothing But Nets. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Cassy Wadsworth

Nothing But Nets....

I read Rick's column first when I get SI, and believe him to be one of the most talented, insightful and solid journalists in any field. This idea is so fanatastic, that I am about to make a donation to buy as many nets as I can.....I mean, for a lousy $10 to save a life...Rick is right....it's a no brainer! Let's all get behind this...it's something, we as Americans who have so much, can't afford not to do! Dick Pither

Great Reminder and Perfect Timing

Thanks Rick, for publishing another column on Nothing But Nets. As a hoops-crazed Hoosier, hearing the net snap from a H-0-R-S-E basket made in a backyard game against my brother and brothers-in-law is a familiar sound in my family. I'm happy to make a donation in their honor to this worthwhile cause.

May God bless this organization and the work that it is doing in Africa.

Nothing But Nets E-mail

My name is Jacob Schwaegler and I am a freshman at Anamosa High School. Our English teacher wanted us to write an essay on the charity of our choice. I am a subscriber to SI and I rembered reading Rick Reilly's article on Nothing But Nets. Since there were no high CEO's who hoard money and I knew it could help I choose it. I have two problems. The first is that I need to find more information. I planned to overcome this problem by e-mailing Rick Reilly, but I couldn't do it through the school. I was hoping you could help me out. If you can find this information please send it to, liesl91@aim.com.

Thanks,
Jacob Schwaegler

Thanks Rick!

I've been an SI subscriber for two years now, and although I used to just skim over your column, I now flip to the back page every week to read it first. Thanks for using your soapbox not only to entertain, but also to bring attention to such a simple and worthwhile cause. After reading this week's column, I made a donation right away! You did an excellent job bringing home your cause's importance and value in just one short article.

Nets

I raced to my computer within seconds of reading Rick's original article and donated. As the Mother of 4 I find it appalling that only 17000 people did the same. C'mon folks- how about a donation in the name of each of your healthy kids. And a little "Thank you God" probably wouldn't hurt either. Barb LeVine Simsbury,Ct.

Thanks Rick

article regarding the malaria epidemic in Africa to all
of my Health classes. Several of my students jumped on
board and made donations to the NothingButNets foundation
Today I will be starting off class reading another article by Rick Reilly. You have made quite an impact on
plenty of young people and I applaud your efforts. Keep
up the good work. By the way, your weekly articles have
been a big part of my lesson plans for many years.
