Junior Chamber International (JCI)
JCI is a membership-based non-profit organization that believes that in order to creating lasting positive change; one must improve him or herself and the world around. The 200,000-member is present in 5000 communities in more than 1000 countries around the world.
Based on its 2004 resolution to advance the UN Millennium Development Goals, JCI wants to contribute to diminishing the mortality rate of children under five. In 2008, JCI teamed up with the Nothing But Nets campaign to help end the fight against malaria by mobilizing its members. How are they doing this?
JCI members both nationally and internationally are working to come up with various projects that would help raise awareness about malaria, fundraise for the purchase and distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets, and encourage elected officials to support and fund malaria prevention programs worldwide through its advocacy efforts.
Since 2011, JCI members have held an annual Regatta where they “sail for nets.” Others in Belgium host the annual Mosquito Car Rally. As of 2013, JCI Japan has 1,000 vending machines around the country selling coffee for Nothing But Nets and raising awareness about malaria. Thanks to these efforts and the creative energy of members and chapters from around the world, JCI has successfully raised of $1,800,000 to send nets and save lives.
Taking the partnership one step further, this summer JCI USA’s president Chrystal Ramsey-Dyess and her family travelled across the United States to Spread The Bzzz about malaria. Dubbed the ‘BzzzTour,’ President Chrystal visited 16 states and hundreds of chapters to fundraise and advocate. President Chrystal empowered members from each of these states to use their voices in the fight against malaria by meeting with over 50 Congressional Offices to urge U.S. to continue its strong leadership and support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria and the President’s Malaria Initiative. The BzzzTour received media attention in almost every state it passed through, allowing JCI USA to Spread The Bzzz even further!
