Houston Makes an Impact

Nothing But Nets hosted a series of events in Houston, TX as part of its national effort to raise money and awareness for malaria prevention. The United Nations Foundation, The People of The United Methodist Church, The Office of Mayor Bill White, the Houston Dynamo, the Houston Rockets, the Houston Comets, and the Houston World Affairs Council co-hosted several events to encourage Houston residents to get involved in this global campaign to save lives by preventing malaria.

  • The Houston Coalition hosted a Nothing But Nets Press Conference.  The Mayor's office, Dwayne De Rosario from the Houston Dynamo, and Exxonmobil were  present to recognize April 25th, World Malaria Day, and to discuss Houston's continued commitment to malaria prevention and Nothing But Nets!

  • Nothing But Nets cheered on the Houston Dynamo against The Real Salt Lake! During the game, the Houston Dynamo featured a number of Nothing But Nets activities, including an auction of signed T-shirts, a Nothing But Nets booth at Soccer Fest, and a half-time presentation honoring Nothing But Nets youth supporters from Houston.

  • Partners were invited to join Nothing But Nets for a press conference hosted by Houston Mayor Bill White, on the steps of City Hall, to announce the city-wide commitment to combating malaria. Council Member Ava Edwards joined Mayor Bill White to declare September 17-September 23, 2007, Nothing But Nets week in Houston.

  • The Model United Nations and World Affairs Council hosted a 3-5 hour workshop on malaria for local high school students. The Boot Camp featured health experts, campaign partners, and other special guests, such as professional athletes, and encouraged students to work within their communities to help to prevent malaria by getting involved in Nothing But Nets.

  • Houston Faith Leadership, including Bishop Janice Huie of The United Methodist Church and Bishop DiNardo from the Catholic Diocese hosted an interfaith luncheon in Houston focused on opportunities for faith groups to get involved in Nothing But Nets and the fight against malaria. Given the Houston faith community's early commitment to this campaign and increased level of awareness, these events aimed to move the dialogue towards greater action and advocacy around the fight against malaria.

World Affairs Council of Houston - Building Hope for Africa Series

Nothing But Nets participated in the Council's Building Hope for Africa speaker series. This luncheon presentation highlighted Nothing But Nets, featuring keynote speaker Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, and focused on the current issues and threats posed by malaria as well as opportunities for various communities to get involved. Local companies and organizations were encouraged to display posters about their work in Africa at the luncheon.
