MLS W.O.R.K.S. is extremely proud to partner with the United Nations Foundation's Nothing but Nets campaign. Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. Every year 350-500 million people are infected with malaria, and over one million of those infected die from the disease. Long lasting insecticide-treated bed nets (LLINs) can lower malaria transmission by up to 90 percent. A donation of $10 to Nothing But Nets covers the cost of purchasing a bed net, distributing it and educating communities on its use.
In year two of the partnership, long term League partner, Makita Industrial Power Tools, has joined MLS W.O.R.K.S. and the fight against malaria by committing to save 10,000 lives through the Makita Team Up for Nets challenge.
Diego Gutierrez of the Chicago Fire, and National Ambassador of Nothing But Nets, is challenging the fans of each MLS Team to save at least 1000 lives in the Makita Team Up for Nets challenge. It's a simple way to send an insecticide- treated bed net to a family in Africa.
Makita has pledged to donate an additional $5000 on behalf of the team whose fans save the most lives by June 30.
